Hagstrom

1 Praise the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens. 2 Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness.3 Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre, 4 praise him with tambourine and dancing, praise him with the strings and flute, 5 praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals. 6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the Lord. PSALM 150

Hagstrom Guitars from Sweden.

In 1958, Swedish-based Hagstrom started manufacturing electric guitars and basses.

Established in the 1925 as a manufacturer of accordions, Hagstrom also has a long history of building guitars. Production of acoustic steel string and classical guitars dates back as early as the 1940‘s. In 1958, the first Hagstrom electric guitars were built. Covered in sparkle and pearloid celluloid with stamped metal logos, they featured an ingenious use of materials previously used in their accordion production. Over time Hagstrom’s range of instruments expanded into classic designs such as semi-acoustic and jazz models (“Viking®” and “Jimmy”), solid-bodies (“Swede” and “Super Swede”), and electric basses. The world’s first 8-string bass, the “H8”, was introduced, and became an instant success. Hagstrom guitars became known world-wide for their professional quality, excellent playability, unique features, and great value.

H-Expander

All Hagstrom electric guitars and basses include our patented H-Expander truss rod. Providing tension at both ends and running the entire length of the neck, the rigid yet light-weight alloy truss rod allows for a very low action and thin neck, two factors that were instrumental in earning Hagstrom its reputation as the world’s fastest playing guitar. The H-Expander truss rod not only provides ultimate neck stability, but it also contributes to Hagstrom’s unique tone. Longer sustain and a round attack are some of the sonic characteristics the H-Expander adds to the tonal essence of Hagstrom.

Sustain Block Tailpiece

Hagstrom’s unique Sustain Block Tailpiece™ was the result of design work starting in 1976 and made its first appearance on Swede and Super Swede guitars produced in 1978. Since then it has been a signature feature on many of our solid body models. Each string terminates in a single, massive brass block coupled directly to the guitar’s body. The blocks are detached from one another to reduce interference between the strings, maximizing each string’s unique contribution.

Set Neck

Hagstrom uses a variety of different neck joints throughout our range. Our set-neck recipe is the classic and time-tested Mortise and Tenon joint, a design that most efficiently transfers string energy from neck to body, and can often only be found on more expensive custom-built guitars. A team of experienced and dedicated craftsmen hand carves every neck joint, insuring perfect execution of this traditional technique preferred by luthiers for generations.

Resinator Wood

Resinator wood is a wood composite material that is both more uniform in density and more stable than any standard wood product. These characteristics eliminate dead spots or "wolf tones" sometimes associated with conventional wood fingerboards. Resinator wood has an articulate sound similar to high quality ebony, but without any of the problems associated with ebony. It provides a stable and clear tone, and also adds higher overtones and harmonics which uniquely detail each note. Like our H-Expander truss rod, Resinator wood is a major contributor to the distinctive "Hagstrom tone".

Hagstrom Machine Heads

Hagstrom models use 18:1 or 15:1 gear ratio machine heads based on our own designs to insure accurate tuning. Viking and HB series basses feature machine heads with a 17:1 gear ratio.

Trapeze Stringholder/Tailpiece

The classic Viking trapeze stringholder/-tailpiece design, is a work of art in itself. Right underneath the top part, where the two beautifully swept beams meet, it features a string claw for easy access and super comfortable string changes. Adorned with the legendary Hagstrom crest it truly is elegance defined.

Vintage Tremar

In combination with the trusted long travel Tune-O-Matic roller bridge and the Graphtech Black TUSQ XL nut, the re-engineered Vintage Tremar vibrato unit keeps it original appearance while tremendously improving its functionality. Smooth vibrato action and great tuning stability included.

Bolt on Neck

  • Slightly brighter and more vivid tone

  • Ample amounts of attack/"snap"

  • Strong resonance and sustain

  • Great serviceability

Hagstrom Cases

Hagstrom hardshell cases are manufactured using high grade plywood and feature heavy-duty gold-plated latches, a comfortable ergonomically soft handle, and a deep plush protective lining which reduces interior movement. The case exterior is made of durable vintage tan Tolex, with a gracefully emblazoned Hagstrom logo. Seams are reinforced with heavy brown stitching, with tasteful leatherette stitched sides.

The rectangular flat cases used for the Pat Smear Signature, Metropolis, HB-8, and RetroScape models feature dark brown leatherette end caps with distinctive brown stitching. The cases for the Super Swede, Swede, Ultra Swede, Viking and H-series hollow-body models, feature a rigid, arched top and form-fitting design.

SUPER SWEDE

First introduced in the late 1970’s, the Super Swede has always been considered one of Hagstrom’s flagship models.

Each Super Swede is crafted using a mahogany body, maple top, and set mahogany neck. With a 25.5” scale length and a pair of coil-split-capable Custom 58 Alnico pickups, the Super Swede provides a brighter sounding, longer sustaining, and more flexible single-cutaway guitar for players looking for something more than any regular single-cut can offer.

Naturally, the Super Swede is equipped with Hagstrom’s renowned H-Expander truss rod and Resinator fretboard for a playing surface that provides the ultimate in stability, comfort and tone.

H-II RETROSCAPE

The H-II and H-III were introduced in 1965, so 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of these iconic guitars. Known for their quirky switches and easy playability, they quickly achieved wide popularity.

Favorites among punk and grunge bands looking for a hard-rocking individualist statement, H-IIs and H-IIIs have been showing up in the hands of artists such as Aaron North (The Icarus Line, Nine Inch Nails) for years. Many people have been asking for these classics to be re-issued, and we at Hagstrom are happy to comply with lovingly recreated and updated versions of these great classics.

A comfortably profiled Canadian Maple neck is bolted to a hand-selected American Alder body insuring that the original attack and "bite" of the H-II and H-III is maintained. The classic 6-in-line Hagstrom headstock design, used for the first production of H-IIs and H-IIIs, has been slightly updated, and the "Vintage Tremar" has been re-engineered for functional improvements without sacrificing its original appearance.

Hagstrom has taken great care in recreating the original pickups, and the new ceramic "C-Spin" pickups do an excellent job of matching the originals' sonic glory. Tone-shaping functionality is enhanced by incorporating Hagstrom's new RC-Circuit into the volume control, which allows for volume reduction without the loss of that high frequency "shimmer".

HJ 500

In 1969 the legendary luthier James “Jimmy” D’Aquisto began cooperation with Hagstrom that was to last nearly 10 years.

Hagstrom’s hollow-body archtop jazz guitar series is the result, and the master’s craft is unmistakably written all over these fine instruments. In fact, the asymmetrical headstock used for these guitars and now used for most current Hagstrom models, was Jimmy’s design.

Immaculately clean, well rounded jazz tones for single note patterns and walking-bass chordal comping are the HJ500’s home turf, although it is fully capable of taking a different route into rock-oriented soundscapes when necessary.
